Can FIBC bags be recycled? How are they recycled?

Challenges in Recycling FIBCs

Discarded FIBC bulk bags are often mixed with contaminants that are hard to eliminate completely: ton bags used in chemical or agricultural settings may retain hazardous substances such as chemical reagents and pesticides, and they also include foreign materials like inner liners, sewing threads, and labels. If washing or sorting is inadequate, these impurities will lower the purity of the recycled PP. Consequently, successful recycling depends on targeted pre-treatment and specialized equipment, and it imposes higher safety and technical demands on both personnel and facilities.

During shredding and high-speed friction washing, PP FIBCs fracture into large quantities of micron-scale fine fragments (“fines”). These particles remain suspended in the wash water or adhere to equipment, increasing the load on filtration and tank cleaning and possibly entering the extrusion stream, thereby lowering the quality of the recycled resin. Ink coatings and paper labels likewise disintegrate into fibrous floc contaminants, further complicating separation. If fines are not effectively captured, they can clog pipelines and settle in water pits, raising maintenance frequency and cost.
